Application of Ti-in-quartz and Ti-in-zircon thermometers in geoscience and progress of microbeam analysis technology of Ti content
Ti-in-quartz and Ti-in-zircon thermometers have a wide range of applications in the field of earth science research. This paper systematically reviews the development history of Ti-in-quartz and Ti-in-zircon thermometers and the typical examples of their applications in geoscience. At present, there are mainly 3 calculation formulas for the Ti-in-quartz thermometers and 2 calculation formulas for the Ti-in-zircon thermometers, respecitively, and the scope of their uses and applicable geological conditions have been uniformly recognized. The premise of the application of Ti-in-quartz and Ti-in-zircon thermometers is the accurate determination of Ti content. This paper reviews the existing in situ microanalysis techniques for Ti content(electron probe, ion probe and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry),focusing on the technical difficulties of ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in the analysis of quartz and zircon Ti,including uncontrollable ablation behavior, polyatomic ion interference, lack of matrix-matched reference materials, etc. The second laser, the high sensitivity/high resolution SF-ICP-MS,the triple quadrupole ICP-MS and other instruments are expected to achieve accurate determination of low content(<5.0×10-6)Ti,which is widely used in Ti-in-quartz and Ti-in-zircon thermometers. The application of these techiniques will provide a strong guarantee for the wide use of the Ti-thermometers.
