Newly discovered high-grade oxidized cobalt ore spot in the central Yunnan Province
There are a number of reports of cobalt deposits, including magmatic, hydrothermal, weathering, and sedimentary types in SW China, particularly Yunnan Province, which makes this region as a critical player in cobalt resource exploration.Recently, the authors identified a new type of cobalt ore spot in the central Yunnan Province. This newly discovered cobalt ore spot exhibits pink-peach red cobalt oxides in Proterozoic silicified low-grade metamorphic rocks and is controlled by structure. The cobalt minerals, occurring as disseminated,fine-veined,and clustered forms, coexist with quartz, mica, apatite, carbonate minerals and sulfides. They are mainly erythrite with minor heterogenite.Chemical analyses of five collected samples yielded an average cobalt content of 0.23%,with a maximum value of 0.92%.Notably,the samples also display enrichments in elements such as copper, arsenic, and nickel.Analyses of two further grooved samples(1.5m/segment)revealed cobalt contents of 0.15%and 0.22%,respectively.The finding of this high-grade oxidized cobalt ore spot has significant theoretical implications and regional cobalt exploration.
