Exploration progress of major metal mineral resources in China and future exploration plan
Mineral resources are a crucial material foundation for national economic and social development. From 2011 to 2019,China implemented the Mineral Prospecting Breakthrough Strategic Action, which led to the discovery of several super-large deposits and a significant increase in identified resource reserves, reshaping the exploration and development landscape of strategic minerals in the country. Based on the evaluation of the Mineral Prospecting Breakthrough Strategic Action, this paper focuses on strategic minerals such as iron,manganese,cop-per,lead-zinc,bauxite,tungsten,tin,molybdenum,gold,and rare earth elements, providing a comprehensive summary of exploration progress over the past decade and highlighting typical cases. The assessment reveals that China still faces prominent issues of resource supply and demand imbalance, increasing external dependency, and rising international supply risks. Additionally, geological exploration encounters new opportunities and chal-lenges. The study identifies three major issues:declining geological exploration investment, increasing difficulties in mineral discovery, and the urgent need to strengthen technological support. Furthermore, the lack of sufficient exploration blocks for future commercial development is highlighted. In response, the paper proposes mineral exploration planning recommendations for 2021-2035,emphasizing the need for enhanced fundamental geological surveys, accelerated exploration of strategic minerals, improved resource development and utilization, and strengthened innovation and technological support.
