Morphological and Semantic Study of Contemporary English Compound Words:A Case Study of Compound Words in Neologisms from Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Over the Past 40 Years
Morphologically,contemporary English compound words mainly function as nouns and are often hyphenated.Internally,these compound words exhibit a rich diversity in word formation,involving a wide array of combining forms in their construction.Semantically,the meanings of compound words can be constructed through both linear,straightforward methods and non-linear,complex ones.By focusing on the morphology and semantic meanings of compound words,we can better understand their traits and development trend,which will then be beneficial and enlightening to the translation of English neologisms,compilation of neologism dictionaries,and English vocabulary teaching.
