Association analysis between periodontitis and dental caries:Real world cross-sectional study based on NHANES database
AIM:To explore the correlation between periodontitis and dental caries based on real-world databases to provide a theoretical basis for the management of both diseases.METHODS:The carious and periodontal examination data from 2011 to 2014 were downloaded from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES)database. The participants were grouped orderly according to disease severity. The generalized ordered Logistic regression models were used for the correlation analysis.RESULTS:A total of 6 299 participants were included in this study, with prevalence of 42.34%,28.15%,and 11.53%for mild, moderate, and severe periodontitis, respectively;and prevalence of 19.60%,28.34%,and 35.61%for mild, moderate, and severe dental caries, respectively. For periodontitis, increasing age,low income, males, excessive alcohol consumption, diabetes, hypertension, and moderate to heavy smoking were risk factors for periodontitis exacerbation.Severe caries was significantly associated with higher risk of periodontal deterioration, while mild and moderate caries had no significant effect. For caries, hypertension, females, low income, increasing age,and heavy smoking were risk factors for exacerbation. All types of periodontitis were significantly correlated with higher risk of carious exacerbation.CONCLUSION:Periodontitis and dental caries are strongly associated, and they contribute to each other's development, with periodontitis having a greater impact on the carious development and occurrence.
