Urban Botanical Garden Development Model Based on Biodiversity Conservation:Using Shanghai Botanical Garden as an Example
The strategic importance of biodiversity conservation and the establishment of national botanical garden system provide new pathways for the advancement of botanical gardens.The Shanghai Botanical Garden is situated in the central urban area of a megacity,balancing the conflicting functional requirements of'ex-situ conservation of plants'and'urban public services'.Finding a unique development path based on its foundation amidst new development opportunities and challenges necessitates strategic planning and research.This article analyzes the developmental history,plant protection and research,science popu-larization services,and other functions of the Shanghai Botanical Garden and highlights the challenges the garden faces in its development.Combined with the differentiated development of Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden and drawing from the world's leading plant development experiences,it puts forward the concept of balancing openness and protection,the idea of blending tradition and modernity,and the approach of combining inheritance and innovation to provide a reference for the de-velopment of botanical gardens in regions with high urbanization indexes.
