Study on the effect of intergenerational support on depression in older adults based on statistical model
Objective To study the effect of intergenerational support on depression in older adults, and to provide data support for the prevention and treatment of depression in older adults. Methods Using the data of the 2018"Chinese longitudinal healthy longevity survey"(CLHLS),the Chi-square test was used for univariate analysis, and the binary logistic regression model and Chi-squared automatic interaction detection(CHAID)were established to investigate the effect of intergenerational support on depression in older adults. Results The results of binary logistic regression analysis showed that choosing children as the first option for sharing worries(OR=0.915,95%CI:0.874-0.985)and parents'financial support for their children(OR=0.356,95%CI:0.198-0.459)were protective factors for depression in older adults.Preferring children for the first choice for intergenerational support during difficulties, females, moderate life satisfaction, poor life satisfaction,self-rated health was fair,self-rated poor health, average sleep quality, poor sleep quality, unmarried, low activitier of daily living(ADL)disability and ADL hyperdisability were risk factors for depression in older adults. The results of CHAID's decision tree showed that marital status, education levelself-rated health, life satisfaction, sleep quality, preferring children as the first choice for difficulties, and parents'financial support for children were the influencing factors of depression in older adults. Conclusion Emotional support, life support and financial support all have an impact on depression in older adults.More communication should be made with older adults, and older adults should be actively enlightened to maintain a positive and optimistic attitude. At the same time, children should give more emotional support to older adults. Both models have high application value in exploring the influencing factors of depression in older adults, and they complement each other, which is conducive to the sufficient analysis of the factors affecting depression in older adults.
