Research on the"Southwest"Regional Space in the Tang and Song Dynasties
Before the Tang and Song Dynasties, the cognition of the"Southwest"was represented by the Qin and Han Dynasties.Specifically,it referred to the regions of Gansu,Sichuan,Yunnan, and Guizhou provinces. At that time, the"Southwest"was separated by a clear boundary line between Hua and Yi based on the Bashu region, without defining the external boundary of the"Southwest Yi".Therefore, the external scope of the region was vague.During the Tang Dynasty, the"Southwest"referred to a vast region including the southern parts of Shaanxi and Gansu,as well as Sichuan,Yunnan,Guizhou, and Chongqing provinces, which was broader than the that in the Qin and Han Dynasties, even extending to the Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. In the Song Dynasty, due to the contraction of the territory, the definition of the"Southwest"was extremely contradictory and vague. Thus, the"Southwest Fan"was only a small part of the vast southwest region in the Qin and Han Dynasties.
