Serial Verb Constructions Describe Single Events:From the Perspective of Language Coding
Based on 20 oral narrative texts of The Pear Story,we try to answer the question whether or not a serial verb construction(SVC)refer to a single conceptual event by analyzing the process how a speaker uses a SVC to code information in utterance. We find that a SVC,focusing on event process, encodes as its conceptual content the process information such as action with its value, action with its ground, starting and ending, which leads to the conclusion that a SVC refers to a single conceptual event from the process level. We can forecast by the conceptual content of the SVC that SVCs in Chinese can refer to a Related-Event,an Associated-Event,a Contained-Event,or a Motion-Event.
