Will Increasing R&D Investment Promote High-Quality Development of Urban Economy:Empirical Evidence from 280 Prefecture-Level Cities in China
How to promote the high-quality development of the urban economy is currently an important issue of concern to all sectors of society, and R&D investments and science and technology innovation have always been two important influencing factors that need to be considered for economic development. The impact of R&D investments on the quality of economic development is empirically analyzed using the relevant data from 280 prefecture-level and above cities from 2017 to 2019.Research has found that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between R&D investments and high-quality economic development, that is,a certain amount of R&D investments can promote high-quality economic development, but when R&D investment exceeds a certain threshold,a larger amount of R&D investment will have a negative impact on the quality of economic development.Scientific and technological innovation is an important transmission channel between R&D investment and high-quality economic development. The mediating role of science and technology innovation between R&D investments and economic development quality will be more obvious;while in small cities, the inverted U-shaped relationship between R&D investments and high-quality economic development is more significant. Therefore,it is a practicable path to improve the quality of economic development by increasing R&D investments to enhance scientific and technological innovation, but R&D investments are not the more the better.Only by effectively converting R&D investments into technological innovation output can high-quality economic development be better achieved.
