The Impact of Higher Education Expenditure on the Urbanization Process in the Western Regions:Based on Panel Data of 12 Cities in Western China
The development of higher education can contribute to the acceleration of urbanization. Based on the panel data of each province in the western regions from 2011 to 2021,this paper uses three different panel models to compare and analyze the impact mechanisms,and studies the impacts of higher education expenditure on the western regions. The study finds that the impacts of higher education expenditure on western region urbanization are significant and continuously enhanced after adding intermediary variables,taking into account different factors;the improvement of the real estate market and public health institutions,as well as the improvement of education of the workforce also contribute positively to the process of urbanization in the western regions;the government plays an important role in this process. It is desirable to increase investment for equal education,strengthen the synergistic development of higher education and local industrial structure,focus on popularization and quality improvement of education,and encourage interdisciplinary research and cooperation to promote the sustainable development of urbanization in the western regions.
