An Algorithm for Chinese Character-Complexity and Its Application
Chinese character-complexity,a vital variable within the realm of Chinese characters conventionally represented by stroke-numbers.However,the impact of glyph on visual complexity has not been sufficiently studied. This study introduced a new method for computing Chinese character-complexity.This involved treating Chinese characters as images, segmenting the contours of characters through block-wise processing, calculating the perimeter complexity of the entire character and deriving a quantitative value for Chinese character complexity.Additionally, this study applied this novel algorithm to the domain of international Chinese education. The findings showed that firstly,in contrast to the traditional stroke-count representation of Chinese character-complexity,the values computed by the new algorithm more effectively captured visual glyph differences among characters with the same stroke-count.Secondly,using the character-level lists of international Chinese education as a sample,no significant difference in character-complexity was found between certain levels.
