The complexity of initials in the dialects of Rizhao and its surrounding areas is particularly significant.This paper takes 16 dialect points as the research object,investigates the types,distributions,and evolution of Zhi-zhuang-zhang(知庄章)and Duan-jing-jian-xiao(端精见晓),and conducts a case study on the controlling relationship of each group of initials in selected dialect points.Finally,this paper discusses the distribution and diffusion of each group of initials and their causes.The diversity of division and combination types of Zhi-zhuang-zhang and Duan-jing-jian-xiao depends on the complex conditions of division and combination within and among each group of initials.Moreover,the diversity of division and combination,as well as pronunciation,depends on the complex sound changes occurred in Zhi-zhuang-zhang and Duan-jing-jian-xiao,such as interdentalization,palatalization,laminalization,fortitio de-retroflexion,plosivization,etc.The internal differences in initials across the dialects of Rizhao and its surrounding areas result from multi-point phonetic innovation and multi-contact among dialects.
