Based on the materials of 48 survey spots in Wuzhi and its neighboring area in Henan Province,as well as related published materials,this paper describes and analyzes the synchronic phonetic features that characterize vowel variations in nouns with the nasal-ending rhyme,while demonstrating the diachronic evolution chain of every She(摄).The results show that the evolutions of Xian(咸)Shan(山)Shen(深)Zhen(臻)are more complicated than those of Dang(宕)Jiang(江)Zeng(曾)Geng(梗)Tong(通).Even for the vowel variations in nouns with the nasal-ending rhyme,the phoneme that underwent the evolution can be speculated through the main vowel and nasal coda.On the same layer,the main participating phoneme is unique.The concomitant existence of[ə]and[ɯ]at a later time contribute to the layering resulted from contact with different dialects.The two vowels are complementary distribution.
