In the border region of Jiangsu and Anhui, the Wu dialect exhibits three main types of pronunciation for the rhyme"Hou"(侯):a front high vowel([ei]/[ʏ]);with a pre-nuclear glide[i]([iəu]);and with a coda-u following a central vowel([əu]).Similarly, the rhyme"You"(尤)has three pronunciation types:a monophthong([ʏ]);a diphthong([iu]);and a triphthong([iəu]).Early in the border region of Jiangsu and Anhui, there were four ways in which rhymes"Hou"(侯)and"You"(尤)were spitted or merged:[ʏ:ʏ],[iəu:iəu],[ei:iəu]and[əu:iəu].These variations resulted from internal sound changes within the dialect itself. The first two types represent different paths leading to the same outcome, while the third exhibits divergent outcomes, and the fourth follows the same path with the same outcome(sharing the same main vowel). All four types stem from a common substratum form of the northern Wu dialect[*eu:*ieu].The pronunciation patterns of rhymes"Hou"(侯)and"You"(尤)in the Wu dialect of the border region between Jiangsu and Anhui exhibit characteristics of stratified overlap.Through competition between different pronunciation types within the Wu dialect,as well as between the Wu dialect and Jianghuai dialect, the pronunciation of rhymes"Hou"(侯)and"You"(尤)manifests complex and mixed features. As a result of the dominant status of the Jianghuai dialect, the pronunciations of rhymes"Hou"(侯)and"You"(尤)in the Wu dialect of the border region between Jiangsu and Anhui are gradually being replaced by the[əu:iəu]type.
