Depression is an important factor affecting the physi-cal and mental health of the elderly.Recent studies have found that having more children does not relieve depression among older adults, however, the under-lying mechanism is still unclear.Based on 6541 samples from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey(CLHLS)dataset, this study ex-plored the relations between depression in the elderly and the number of their children, also followed the mediation effect of the intergenerational emotional support and the moderating effect of age.The results showed that intergenerational emotional support had a"suppression effect"between the number of chil-dren and depression in the elderly. The age of the el-derly moderated the effect of the number of children on intergenerational emotional support. The conclu-sion was that intergenerational emotional support could cover up the negative impact of the number of children on depression in the elderly, and older peo-ple were more difficult to obtain intergenerational e-motional support. The results highlighted the impor-tant role of intergenerational emotional support.
