Black-necked crane,Grus nigricollis,had stopover in Jiulong and Luding counties,Sichuan Province,China
Of the 15 crane species worldwide, the black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis),a nationally-protected species,is the sole inhabitant of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is the latest crane species to be discovered and described.During migration, the cranes require suitable habitats for brief stopovers to replenish energy or roost at night. However, limited information is available on the selection of stopover sites. On December 10,2014,and March 22,2023,an adult and a subadult black-necked crane were photographed in Hongba Town in Jiulong County and Erlang Mountain Forest Park in Luding County, respectively. The adult spent approximately 50 min in a shrub glade before flying towards its wintering grounds, whereas the subadult stayed for 41 min in the mixed coniferous and broad forests near National Road 318 and settlements. This study fills a gap in our knowledge of the migratory stopover sites for the eastern population of the black-necked crane and provides valuable insights for local forestry and grassland departments in implementing effective conservation measures.
