Chinese red panda found in alpine scree at 4 939 m altitude in Gongga Mountains,Sichuan Province,China
The Chinese red panda(Ailurus styani)is an endangered, nationally protected carnivore that mainly inhabits the Hengduan Mountains. Its unique ecological niche is attributed to its highly specialized diet(mainly composed of bamboo).Prior studies have indicated that its altitude range is primarily between 2 000 and 3 800 m.On October 31,2022,at 15:29,an infrared camera captured three images and one video of a red panda(101°46'53"E,29°35'58"N,4 939 m above sea level)near the Gongga Temple in Gongga Mountains,Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture,Sichuan Province. This discovery extended the upper elevational limit of the Chinese red panda and provided crucial data for its in-situ conservation.
