Labor Market Segmentation and Manufacturing Agglomeration in High-speed Rail Era——Evidence from a Sample of 230 Cities
The development of China's high-speed rail improves the efficiency in labor mobility.By selecting 230 prefecture level cities in China as samples and using a gravity model to measure the efficiency of labor factor mobility, this study analyzes the impact of high-speed rail opening on labor market segmentation and manufacturing industry spatial agglomeration. The results are as follows.Firstly, the high-speed railway has remarkably accelerated the labor mobility efficiency of China's cities and weakened the situation of labor market segmentation between cities, which provides a basis for the migration and clustering of manufacturing industry.Secondly, the impact of high-speed rail has witnessed the significant heterogeneity of city and enterprise size. The o-pening of high-speed railway accelerates the migration of small manufacturing enterprises from big cities to small and medium-sized cities. The manufacturing industry of our country will gradually evolve and form the spatial characteristics of classified agglomeration.Thirdly, the im-pact of high-speed rail on labor market segmentation and manufacturing agglomeration shows a significant time effect,an inverted"U"structure emerging with the extension of the opening time.Based on this, relevant policy recommendations can be proposed from the perspectives of factor marketization, industrial policy differentiation, and modernization of the business environ-ment.
