Reproductive Hormones and Regulation on Reproductive Activity in Sows
China is the world's largest pig farming country, with the highest pig inventory and pork production in the world.Sows are the"engine"of pig farms. The reproductive performance of sow herds directly affects the profitability of pig farms. The normal operation of reproductive activities such as estrus, pregnancy, and childbirth in sows is the basis for their reproductive performance.Influenced by reproductive hormones, reproductive hormones are precisely regulated by the"hypothalamic pituitary gonadal"regulatory axis.In recent years, many small and medium-sized pig farms have begun to explore the use of exogenous reproductive hormones to control sow estrus synchronization, increase conception rate, maintain pregnancy, promote synchronous delivery, reduce difficult childbirth, and induce estrus in order to improve production efficiency and reduce cost expenditures. This article provides a review of the types of reproductive hormones, their mutual effects, and their regulation and application on the reproductive activity of sows,in order to provide reference for aquaculture practitioners.
