Research Progress on Antibiotic Alternatives in the Poultry Industry
The poultry industry has experienced rapid growth in the past thirty years, with antibiotics being used as growth promoters and therapeutic agents for a long time in production. The emergence of drug-resistant bacteria, drug residues, and increased consumer demand for non antibiotic products have accelerated the search for alternatives to antibiotics without compromising production levels and quality. The intestinal health of poultry has always been a key research area in poultry production, and the gastrointestinal tract is the organ that comes into contact with most environmental pathogens near the skin. Therefore, the main goal of poultry production is to maintain good intestinal health and function. If intestinal function and health are compromised, the digestion and absorption of nutrients will be affected, thereby affecting the overall health and production performance of poultry, ultimately affecting the economy of poultry production. At present, such substitutes in the poultry industry include organic acids, probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, vitamins, minerals, traditional Chinese medicine extracts, antimicrobial peptides, and biotins. This article will provide a review of antibiotic alternatives that have been developed or are being explored.
