Effects of Frozen Semen on Reproductive Performance of Sows
The aim of this study was to assess the effects of frozen semen on reproductive performance of sows.Thirty-six healthy large white sows with similar body weight(130±5)kg were randomly divided into two groups:semen storage at room temperature and cryopreservation. The results showed that compared with the storage of semen at room temperature, the storage time of frozen semen could be significantly extended(P<0.05),and the viability of semen could still be higher after long-term storage(P<0.05).Compared with that stored at room temperature, the number of piglets born in frozen semen was lower(P<0.05),and the number of piglets born alive, healthy and weak was decreased(P<0.05).Compared with stored semen at room temperature, frozen semen can increase birth weight and weaning weight of piglets, but there is no significant difference in mortality and diarrhea rates. The results of this study showed that frozen semen could significantly improve the storage time of semen, increase the live litter size, birth weight and weaning weight of sows, and significantly improve the reproductive performance of sows.
