Diagnosis of a Case of Malignant Catarrhal Fever in Cattle
Bovine malignant catarrhal fever is a contagious infectious disease caused by herpes virus.It is characterized by persistent high fever,universal ophthalmia,corneal opacity,nasal mucosa,oral mucosa ulcer,erosion,foaming mouth saliva,a large amount of serous or mucous nasal fluid,and systemic lymphadenomegaly.Although the disease is sporadic,the incidence is low,but the mortality is high.It has caused certain losses and panic to cattle farmers,and provided theoretical and practical reference for the prevention and control of bovine malignant catarrhal fever.The author conducted polymerase chain reaction(PCR)test through epidemiological investigation,clinical examination and collection of nasal fluid and saliva swabs of infected cattle[1],and diagnosed a 3-year-old Simmental cow suspected of malignant catarrhal fever in a beef cattle free-range household in Mingshui County,Heilongjiang Province.Ovine herpes virus type 2(OHV-2)infection was confirmed.
