Progress in the Study of Pennisetum purpureum Silage Technology
Pennisetum purpureum is a perennial herb belonging to the genus Pennisetum in the family Poaceae. It has the advantages of fast growth, high yield, and wide adaptability, and is an excellent forage for feeding ruminants. It is widely planted in southern China. The growth rate of Pennisetum purpureum throughout the year is parabolic, with slow growth in spring and winter, and even stops, resulting in a shortage of forage supply;in summer and autumn,it grows vigorously, resulting in an oversupply of forage. However, the demand for feed for livestock and poultry is balanced throughout the year.In addition, southern China is characterized by frequent rain and high humidity, making the preparation of hay not only costly but also reducing the nutritional value of Pennisetum purpureum. Therefore, using silage technology to reserve Pennisetum purpureum is an ideal measure to solve the above contradictions. This article reviews the commonly used silage technologies for Pennisetum purpureum, analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of various Pennisetum purpureum silage technologies, and proposes future research directions for Pennisetum purpureum silage technology,in order to provide references for the further promotion of Pennisetum purpureum in animal husbandry.
