Application of insect olfactory responses in the screening of cowpea germplasm resistant to Bemisia tabaci
To clarify the differences in resistance to Q-type Bemisia tabaci among 24 cowpea germplasm materials and to provide basic information for screening new insect-resistant cowpea cultivars,we studied the selection preference and 72-hour fecundity of Q-type Bemisia tabaci on different germplasm materials and its relationship with cowpea morphological characteristics. The determination of insect olfactory response, combined with pot planting trials and surveys of cowpea morphological characteristics were used in this study. The results showed significant differences in the selection of Q-type Bemisia tabaci on the tested cowpea cultivars.'Xiajiangyihao'was found to be significantly more attractive to Q-type than the other materials, while'Jinfucuiliu'was significantly more repellent. It was suggested that'Jinfucuiliu'is suitable for planting and can be used as a breeding material resistant to the Q-type Bemisia tabaci.Morphological characters such as trailing, pod color, and pod length of the cowpea had no effect on the selection of Q-type Bemisia tabaci.
