Population dynamics and sampling survey methods of Monolepta hieroglyphica adults in maize fields in Xinjiang
The objective of this study was to clarify the spatiotemporal dynamics of the adult population of Monolepta hieroglyphica in maize fields in Xinjiang and to develop population monitoring sampling technology. We compared the sampling methods for estimating the abundance of M.hieroglyphica in corn fields of Ili,Xinjiang, investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of M.hieroglyphica population during 2022 and 2023,and established the theoretical sampling number and sequential sampling models. The results showed that the population density estimated through visual observation was significantly higher than that obtained through the basin-beating sampling method and sweeping method. However, there was no significant difference between the visual observation method and the yellow board trapping method. The time required for the visual observation was found to be significantly less than that required for the yellow board trapping method, but significantly greater than that required for the sweeping method and basin-beating method. The visual observation method was deemed the optimal approach for conducting population surveys of M.hieroglyphica in corn fields. The population dynamics of M.hieroglyphica in corn fields exhibited a single-peak pattern. The adults population began to increase in early June, and peaked in mid-to-late July in the Ili area. The spatial distribution patterns of M.hieroglyphica adults in the corn field exhibited a density-dependent aggregation distribution at the peak of its population density.Based on the Iwao regression model,a theoretical sampling model of M.hieroglyphica adults and a sequential sampling technique based on previous action thresholds were proposed. These results provided the technical basis for field sampling surveys, population prediction, and scientific control of M.hieroglyphica in maize fields in Xinjiang.
