A Study of the Governance of Yanran Capital and Central Surrendered City in the Tang Dynasty
The Baotou Plain in the central part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region,positioned directly north of Chang'an,the Western Capital of the Tang dynasty,was known as the"Northern Gate of the State"and was a focal area of the Tang dynasty's operations in its northern frontier.In the twenty-first year of the Zhenguan era(647 AD),Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty established the Yanyan Protectorate on the Baotou Plain.In the second year of the Jinglong era(708 AD),Zhang Renyuan constructed the city of Zhongshouxiang on the Baotou Plain.Preliminary investigations,combi-ning archaeological research with historical records,have identified the administrative center of the Yanyan Protectorate as the ancient city of Aotaoyaozi in the Jiuyuan District of Baotou,Inner Mongolia,and Zhongshouxiang City as the ancient city of Ergouwan in Dalad Banner,Ordos City,Inner Mongolia.
