The utilization and associated factors of rush poppers among men who have sex with men in Guangxi
Objective This study explores the current situation of rush poppers use among men who have sex with men(MSM)in Guangxi,as well as its related factors, and provides scientific evidence for the formulation of targeted intervention measures. Methods MSM were recruited for a face-to-face questionnaire survey from March to July 2022 via multiple paths.A multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze factors that influenced the use of rush poppers and its relationship with high-risk sexual behaviors. Results A total of 1 006 MSM were recruited.Among them,34.0%were aged between 18 and 24 years,40.0%held a bachelor's degree or higher,64.3%had 2 or more homosexual partners in the previous six months,30.6%(308/1 006)had unprotected anal intercourse within the last month, and 35.7%used rush poppers within the last year.Multivariate analysis revealed that the main factors influencing rush poppers use included age between 18 and 24 and age between 25 and 39 years(vs.≥40 years,aOR=2.93,95%CI:1.66-5.14;aOR=4.52,95%CI:2.71-7.53),minority ethnicity(vs.Han ethnicity,aOR=1.37,95%CI:1.03-1.83),age at first homosexual intercourse<20 years(vs.≥20 years,aOR=1.80,95%CI:1.30-2.51),having 2-5 or>6 homosexual partners in the previous six months(vs.≤1 homosexual partner,aOR=3.08,95%CI:2.22-4.28;aOR=4.59,95%CI:2.91-7.23),having regular homosexual partners within the last month(vs.no regular homosexual partners,aOR=1.69,95%CI:1.23-2.31),having unprotected receptive anal intercourse within the last month(vs.no unprotected receptive anal intercourse,aOR=1.84,95%CI:1.30-2.62),and using other recreational drugs within the last year(vs.no other recreational drug use,aOR=4.21,95%CI:2.29-7.73).Conclusions The proportion of using rush poppers among MSM in Guangxi is relatively high, and is associated with age, ethnicity, and high-risk sexual behaviors such as multiple sexual partners and unprotected receptive anal intercourse. The access to rush poppers should be further investigated for strengthened target supervision.Health education via online platforms should be fully utilized to enhance awareness of the harmfulness of rush poppers, especially among young adults and the MSM population from minority ethnic groups.
