Occurrence of high risk sexual behaviors and influencing factors among HIV/AIDS diagnosed patients in Anhui Province
Objective To understand the occurrence of high risk sexual behaviors and the influencing factors among HIV/AIDS diagnosed patients in Anhui Province. Methods Using purposive sampling, four cities/counties in major HIV/AIDS epidemic areas in Anhui Province were selected as survey sites, and a cross-sectional survey was conducted among HIV/AIDS patients aged 18 years and above who were currently living in these selected areas. Results A total of 1 608 HIV/AIDS patients were surveyed, and their HIV/AIDS-related knowledge awareness rate was 95.8%(1 540/1 608).Among the respondents,54.7%(478/874)reported engaging in sexual activities with their spouse or cohabitant in the last year after being diagnosed with HIV,of whom 14.0%(67/478)reported engaging in high risk sexual behaviors. In the last year,5.2%(84/1 608)of the respondents reported engaging in commercial sexual activities, and among them,22.6%(19/84)reported engaging in high risk sexual behaviors.Furthermore,8.4%(135/1 608)of the respondents were involved in casual sexual activities(such as one-night stands),and among them,20.0%(27/135)reported engaging in high risk sexual behaviors. In addition,4.6%(54/1 186)of the respondents engaged in homosexual sexual activities, and among them,40.7%(22/54)reported engaging in high risk sexual behaviors.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that HIV/AIDS patients living in Hefei City(OR=0.170,95%CI:0.075-0.385)and Lu'an city(OR=0.226,95%CI:0.125-0.407),had low education level(OR=1.174,95%CI:1.039-2.834),lack of awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention and control knowledge(OR=2.556,95%CI:1.097-5.955),not receiving free condom distribution services in the past 6 months(OR=4.095,95%CI:1.435-11.683),and not receiving HIV/AIDS publicity materials in the past 6 months(OR=2.929,95%CI:1.004-8.544)were risk factors for engaging in high risk sexual behaviors after HIV/AIDS diagnosis. Conclusions A certain proportion of HIV/AIDS patients in Anhui Province still engage in high risk sexual behaviors after being diagnosed with HIV,posing a risk of HIV transmission to their spouses or sexual partners.Continuous efforts should be made to strengthen health education and promote the use of condoms among HIV/AIDS patients with a lower level of education.Additionally, regular distribution of free condoms and HIV/AIDS publicity materials to HIV/AIDS patients is recommended.
