Awareness rate and influencing factors of hepatitis C prevention and treatment knowledge among clinical physicians in Sichuan Province
Objective To investigate the current level of awareness of hepatitis C virus(HCV)prevention and treatment knowledge among clinical physicians in Sichuan Province,China, and to provide baseline data for future work in this area. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among clinical physicians from 11 comprehensive hospitals in Sichuan Province to assess their awareness of HCV prevention and treatment knowledge.Statistical analysis was performed on the collected data. Results A total of 322 valid questionnaires were collected, with an overall basic knowledge awareness rate of 94.41%.Compared with physicians from county-level hospitals, those from prefecture-level hospitals had a lower awareness rate(OR=0.108,P=0.033).The professional question with the lowest awareness rate was"diagnostic classification of HCV"(22.05%).A totally of 7 questions with an awareness rate less than 60.00%were analyzed, and only the hospital grade of"characteristics of HCV"showed a statistically significant difference(P<0.001).Multivariate analysis of the remaining 6 questions showed that, except for"types of HCV cases requiring antiviral treatment"in prefecture-level hospitals, and"the high-risk populations for hepatitis C"in provincial-level hospitals, the awareness rates for the remaining 5 questions were relatively low(P≤0.05).The awareness rates for"clinical diagnosis criteria for HCV"and"types of HCV cases requiring antiviral treatment"were higher in tertiary hospitals(OR=58.308,OR=6.331,P<0.001).Regarding"clinical diagnosis criteria for HCV",the awareness rate was higher among surgeons(OR=2.973,P=0.014),and regarding"diagnostic classification of HCV",the awareness rate was higher among physicians specializing in obstetrics/gynecology,pediatrics,dermatology/venereology,and infectious diseases(OR=2.795,P=0.031).Awareness rate was also higher among those who had received HCV-related training in the past year(OR=2.212,P=0.017).However,the awareness rate of"significance of a positive anti-HCV blood test"was lower among physicians with more than five years of experience(OR=0.482,P=0.011).Conclusions The awareness of HCV prevention and treatment knowledge among clinical physicians in Sichuan Province,China,is relatively low.It is necessary to conduct large-scale and targeted training programs specifically designed for clinical physicians in this region.
