Systematic review of psychological resilience interventions on HIV infected adolescents
Objective This systematic review aims to identify and evaluate psychological resilience intervention programs for adolescents living with HIV,so as to provide a reference for developing such programs specifically for adolescents living with HIV in China. Methods A comprehensive search was conducted across thirteen databases, including China National Knowledge Internet(CNKI),Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform,VIP Chinese Journal Service Platform,PubMed,American Psychological Association(APA PsychInfo),and EMBASE,etc.A combined retrieval mode of MeSH terms and keywords was used to collect studies on psychological resilience interventions for HIV-infected adolescents. The search period was limited from 1981 to September 2023.Results A total of 10 English-language articles were included in the study, including 7 randomized controlled trials and 3 pre-post intervention studies. The overall quality of the included studies was considered moderate.A total of 10 intervention programs,9 theories, and 2 theoretical models were identified, with 2 studies incorporating 2 different theories.Interventions targeted HIV-infected adolescents, with 5 studies including both adolescents and caregivers. The Interventions focused on utilizing peer support, family support, and other positive resources,to reduce social isolation and stigma, and improve disease knowledge and self-management skills.Various intervention formats were employed, including lectures, interviews, peer communication, and case management. The interventions were primarily implemented by psychologists and/or clinical experts,as well as HIV-infected individuals. The intervention settings included medical institutions, communities, workshops for adolescent HIV-infected individuals, and camps.Evaluation tools, intervention duration, and participant engagement varied across studies, with intervention durations ranging from 4 days to 1 year.Overall, the interventions demonstrated positive effects. Conclusions Psychological resilience intervention programs for HIV infected adolescents have gradually shifted from single-focus to comprehensive approaches. There is diversity in intervention formats, intervention settings, and intervention implementers, and the focus of interventions tends to be multidimensional. In China, psychological resilience interventions for HIV-infected adolescents are still in the exploratory stage, and it is necessary to draw on international intervention experiences to develop specific psychological resilience intervention programs for this population in China.
