Meta-analysis of the association between intimate partner violence and high risk sexual behavior among men who have sex with men
Objective This meta-analysis explores the association between experiences of intimate partner violence(IPV)among men who have sex with men(MSM)and their risk of engaging in high risk sexual behaviors. Methods A comprehensive search for correlational studies about IPV and high risk sexual behaviors among MSM was conducted on electronic databases, including Web of Science,PubMed,Embase,Cochrane Library,China National Knowledge Internet(CNKI),Chinese Biomedical Literature Database,Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform,VIP Chinese Journal Service Platform, from database inception to February 2024.Studies were evaluated using Revman 5.4 and Stata 17.0.Results Twenty-two studies(20 cross-sectional and two cohort studies)with a total of 16 748 MSM were included.Experiencing IPV significantly increased the likelihood of unprotected sex(OR=1.64,95%CI:1.47-1.84),casual sex(OR=1.60,95%CI:1.36-1.88),commercial sex(OR=1.73,95%CI:1.53-1.96),and multiple sex partners(OR=1.22,95%CI:1.01-1.46).Conclusions Based on existing research,MSM experiencing IPV are at increased risk for various high risk sexual behaviors.Further prospective studies with larger samples are needed to inform clinical decision-making and intervention strategies for HIV/AIDS prevention in MSM.
