Meta-analysis of rush poppers usage among men who have sex with men in China
Objective To systematically evaluate the usage of nitrite inhalants(rush poppers)among men who have sex with men(MSM)in China,and to provide a scientific basis for targeted interventions.Methods Relevant literature on the usage of rush poppers among MSM in China was retrieved from databases including China Biology Medicine disc(CBM),China National Knowledge Internet(CNKI),VIP Chinese Journal Service Platform,Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform,Embase(via OVID),PubMed,Cochrane Library,and Web of Science.The search period ranged from the inception to February 2024.Meta-analysis was conducted using Stata 16.0 software.Results A total of 39 articles with 42 620 MSM participants were included in the analysis.The results showed that the prevalence of rush poppers usage among Chinese MSM was 29.0％(95％CI:25.0％-33.0％).Subgroup analysis revealed that the rate was 29.2％(95％CI:25.0％-33.4％)for investigations conducted before 2016,and 31.6％(95％CI:24.3％-39.0％)for investigations conducted after 2016.The usage rate was 34.7％(95％CI:30.3％-39.2％)for participants from northern China,and 26.1％(95％CI:21.2％-31.1％)for those from southern China.Unmarried participants had a rate of 29.8％(95％CI:25.4％-34.3％),while married,divorced,or widowed participants had a rate of 19.5％(95％CI:15.9％-23.1％).Among participants aged ≤25 years,the rate was 29.7％(95％CI:22.0％-37.4％),while among those＞25 years,it was 26.2％(95％CI:19.7％-32.8％).Participants with a monthly income＜3 000 RMB had a usage rate of 25.2％(95％CI:17.4％-32.9％),while those with an income ≥3 000 RMB had a rate of 34.7％(95％CI:28.1％-41.3％).Participants with a high school education or below had a rate of 23.4％(95％CI:18.9％-27.8％),while those with a college education or above had a rate of 28.6％(95％CI:23.8％-29.5％).Conclusions The usage rate of rush poppers among Chinese MSM is relatively high.It is important to pay close attention to key populations,such as those from northern China,unmarried individuals,those aged ≤25 years,those with a monthly income ≥3 000 RMB,and those with a college education or above.Intervention measures should be implemented to reduce the usage of rush poppers among MSM.
