A survey on sexual and reproductive health of adolescents in cross-border marriage families in Dehong,Yunnan
Objective This study aimed to assess the sexual and reproductive health status of adolescents in cross-border marriage families in Dehong Prefecture,Yunnan Province.Methods A cross-sectional survey targeting adolescents in cross-border marriage families was conducted from September 2022 to September 2023 in five Dehong Prefecture,Yunnan Province.The survey included questions about demographic characteristics,sources of sexual and reproductive health knowledge,awareness,knowledge needs,and sexual behaviors.Descriptive analysis was used to compare the differences in these aspects among sexes and adolescents in different school settings.Results A total of 1610 adolescents were surveyed,with boys accounting for 48.9％(788 cases).Among them,74.3％(1 196 cases)were junior high school students,and 14.4％(232 cases)were high school students.Of the adolescents,92.9％(1 496 cases)had acquired sexual and reproductive health knowledge,with girls and students in a school setting having higher knowledge acquisition rates than boys and students outside school.The school curriculum was the main source of this knowledge(86.3％,1 389 cases).Although 83.5％(1 344 cases)of the adolescents self-assessed their understanding of reproductive health knowledge,the actual awareness rates were lower,with awareness rates of 52.9％(851 cases)for reproductive health and 29.3％(472 cases)for sexual health.Students in school settings had higher awareness rates than students outside school,and there was no statistically difference in awareness rates between genders.The reported sexual behavior rate was 2.4％(39 cases),with higher rates among students outside school than among those in school.A total of 96.5％(1 554 cases)of the adolescents expressed a willingness to further enhance their knowledge of sexual and reproductive health,with a higher willingness among girls and students in school settings.Conclusions The awareness of sexual and reproductive health knowledge among adolescents in cross-border marriage families in Dehong Prefecture,Yunnan Province,requires improvement.Implementing comprehensive educational measures,including strengthening school education,promoting family education and community awareness,and utilizing various online and offline educational formats is necessary.Additionally,specific attention should be paid to the needs of adolescent boys and students outside school to ensure comprehensive and effective sexual and reproductive health education.
