Rush use and related factors among men who have sex with men in selected areas of Sichuan Province
Objective To investigate the prevalence of rush use and its related factors among men who have sex with men(MSM)in selected regions of Sichuan Province, thereby providing a basis for the formulation of designating interventions for the MSM.Methods A combination of purposive sampling and snowball sampling was employed to conduct a questionnaire survey of 281 MSM in Chengdu and Deyang from August to October 2022,along with HIV antibody testing.Chi-square tests were used to compare differences in rush use among MSM with varying sociodemographic and sexual behavior characteristics, and multifactorial logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the influencing factors related to Rush use. Results Among the 281 MSM respondents,32.7%reported having used rush.Of these,63.0%were aged ≤31 years,57.3%had attained a college education or higher, and 30.6%had a monthly income of ≥5 000 yuan.Additionally,36.3%had experienced a casual homosexual partner in the past six months,10.8%reported engaging in group sexual behaviors, and 38.1%participated in heterosexual activities. The logistic regression analysis indicated that, compared to those identifying as homosexual, bisexual individuals(aOR=0.32,95%CI:0.16-0.64)were less likely to use rush;individuals who had their first homosexual encounter at or below the age of 22(aOR=2.14,95%CI:1.07-4.30)had a higher likelihood of Rush use compared to those whose first encounter occurred above the age of 22;those with a casual homosexual partner in the past six months(aOR=3.29,95%CI:1.75-6.16)were more likely to use rush compared to those without;and individuals who engaged in group sexual behaviors(aOR=2.72,95%CI:1.20-6.16)had a higher probability of rush use compared to those who did not. Conclusions The prevalence of rush use among MSM in selected regions of Sichuan Province is relatively high.Attention should be directed towards MSM characterized by being ≤22 years old at their first homosexual encounter, having had a homosexual casual partner in the past six months, and engaging in group sexual behaviors.Health education on substance use should be conducted for MSM exhibiting these characteristics, highlighting the risks associated with Rush to reduce the potential for HIV transmission within this population.
