Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding pre-exposure prophylaxis and its influencing factors among men who have sex with men in China:a meta-analysis
Objective To comprehend the level of awareness, willingness, and behaviors related to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis(PrEP)among men who have sex with men(MSM)in China,as well as the factors influencing these variables. Methods A comprehensive search was conducted using databases such as Web of Science,PubMed,Science Direct,The Cochrane Library,Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform,VIP Chinese Journal Service Platform,China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database to identify cross-sectional studies on MSM's awareness, acceptance, and usage of PrEP.Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software. Results Thirty-three articles were included, representing a total sample of 38 577 MSM.The meta-analysis showed that the rate of awareness of PrEP among MSM was 55%(95%CI:45%-65%),the willingness to accept PrEP after gaining knowledge of it was 58%(95%CI:46%-71%),and the actual usage rate of PrEP was 8%(95%CI:6%-1 1%).Factors that promoted PrEP use among Chinese MSM included having a college degree or higher(OR=1.95,95%CI:1.59-2.38),a monthly income of ≥5 000 yuan(OR=1.62,95%CI:1.28-2.05),identifying as homosexual(OR=2.01,95%CI:1.65-2.44),perceiving oneself at high risk of HIV infection(OR=2.12,95%CI:1.34-3.35),and being aware of PrEP(OR=2.52,95%CI:1.71-3.72).Conclusions Awareness and willingness to use PrEP among MSM in China are moderate, with even lower actual usage rates.A variety of factors influence PrEP use among MSM.By exploring PrEP service models that align with the characteristics of MSM in China and reinforcing the conversion of willingness to behavior, the application and promotion of PrEP can be effectively enhanced.
