Compilation Research on Nanjing Shangbaosi(Seals Keeping Bureau)Records of Ming Dynasty
The only existing copy of Nanjing Shangbaosi(Seals Keeping Bureau)Records in the collection of Nanjing Library is the official agency records of Ming Dynasty Nanjing Shangbaosi, which was completed in the middle summer of the third year of the Reign of Tianqi(1623).The person who initiated the compilation was Fu Zonggao, the Chief of Nanjing Shangbaosi, and the actual compiler was Pan Huansu, member of the Nanjing Imperial Academy. The origin of the compilation of Nanjing Shangbaosi Records was related to the search and collection of historical references for factual records of the Reign of Wanli and Taichang and the southern trip following Imperial order by Chief Compiler Dong Qichang.Nanjing Shangbaosi Records, through reorganization of historical references of codified systems such as The Great Ming Dynasty Collected Codes, constructed the knowledge system surrounding the official seals of the Ming Dynasty Imperial Court kept by Shangbaosi. The selection and employment of compilers and the origins of references demonstrated the cooperation of manpower and resources both officially and privately during the compilation process.
