National Identification,Frontier Governance, and Cultural Fusion in Qing Dynasty Inner Mongolia as Seen in Local Records
The compilation of Qing Dynasty Inner Mongolia local records was an important way for the Qing Dynasty Court to stabilize frontier, integrate Inner Mongolia into the national governance system, and strengthen cultural identification. The compilers on the one hand highly affirmed the role of the Mongolian princes and dukes in Inner Mongolia, and on the other hand stressed the submission of Mongolia to the rule of Qing Dynasty Court, and propagated the great significance of Qing Dynasty unifying Inner and Outer Mongolia,so as to demonstrate the governance achievements of the Qing Dynasty in frontier regions.Meanwhile, the compilers also emphasized the building up of the typical images of Manchurian Mongolian Eight Banners personages that conformed to Confucian ethics and values. Some of these personages were loved and supported by people for their involvement in local governance, and others for conforming to traditional virtues such as loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, and righteousness.Images such as women who died in defense of their chastity among the Eight Banners were also emphasized to help with ethnicity identification and national identification construction. In addition, the compilers also noticed the convergence of social customs of the Mongolian and Han ethnicity, and the phenomenon of gradual convergence of the two ethnicities culturally and religiously, and intentionally worked towards construction of cultural identification. As for the special cultural phenomenon of the convergence of the frontier regions and inland areas presented in local records,it is a demonstration of the attempt by the compilers to strengthen the centripetal force of frontier society towards the central authority, which has great significance for our understanding of Qing Dynasty Inner Mongolia frontier governance and national identification.
