Best of County Records—A Special Set of Local Records on Produces
Best of County Records was an anonymous work compiled by Japanese person(s)during the Edo Period from transcriptions of produces in local records by medical students attending medical schools.Local produces which cover large amounts of information are the most important window and channel for learning about the resources and natural environment status of a certain place.The Yedo Shogunate,due to factors such as growing industries and trade references,not only purchased and collected Chinese local records in large amounts,but also paid special attention to local produces to learn about all sorts of needed resources from these local records.During this period,the research of Japanese scholars on Chinese local records mainly focused on local produces,the main representative form of which was to copy and sort produces from local records in large amount.Best of County Records as one of the many achievements in transcriptions,not only represents the state of local records sorting by Japanese scholars during this period,but also reflects the policy of seeking real studies by the Yedo Shogunate on academic studies.Moreover,the Yedo Shogunate period was also the prosperity period of Chinese prescriptions in Japan,during which people with medical backgrounds transcribed and sorted produces with comprehensive herbal medicine features in large amount,serving also as a window of exploring the overall development of herbal medicine studies in Japan during the modem period.
