The Drawing of Early Qing Dynasty Local Records Coastal Defense Maps and Analysis of Their Usages
Qing Dynasty implemented an inner and outer seas management system,in which local records coastal defense maps were important in presenting the maritime spatial cognition of local officials and local gentries.The information for local records coastal defense maps drawn during early Qing Dynasty,came from local records,local archives,field investigations,and other coastal defense maps.The purposes of these drawings were to present situations of territorial coastal areas,to provide references for officials in governing the people,to praise the emperors of their effective governance,and to be used for management of the coastal areas and division of territories and for arresting burglars and maintaining security,having certain political connotations and practical values.The usage of local records coastal defense maps in coastal defense affairs needs to be combined with entries in coastal defense records and territorial records,and references such as local archives and military station maps,so as to present the maritime spatial consciousness and coastal territories administrative needs of local officials in entirety,which were also important expressions of the"sea and coast as one body"maritime outlook of people during the Qing Dynasty.
