Along with Western geography knowledges coming into China in modern period, problems such as status shifting and outlook transformation occurred on part of the local records map drawers.Through sorting of life stories of more than 180 local records map drawers in the southwestern region during modern period,we discovered that on the one hand, this group of people failed to form stable status identity, nor did they break through the restrictions of"gentry society"since Ming and Qing Dynasty;on the other hand, since they were in a transitional period of modern times, the map-making outlook of the drawers presented a contradictory state being"neither new nor old".Explorations of the status evolution and outlook transformation of local records map drawers in southwestern region during modern period, and analysis of multiple features and principles of traditional geography concepts as well as newly emerged geography theories represented by these people, have important inspirational significance for more in-depth research of China local records studies and cartography during modern period.
