Di Renjie as a Folk Faith—The Circulation of Judge Di Faith as Reflected in Local Records of Ming and Qing Dynasty
Using local recordsof Ming and Qing Dynasty to investigate Judge Di faith in various places of China,we can take a glimpse of its various faces in the course of circulation from Tang to Qing Dynasty.The Judge Di faith since Tang Dynasty gradually spread from certain places to the whole country.At Places where Di Renjie held offices such as Pengze were firstly established memorial temples,gradually influencing neighboring areas.From late Ming to Qing Dynasty,Judge Di established its godly image nationwide.Judge Di faith in its course of circulation in various places at least had two push powers,officially and in folk,therefore there had always been different Judge Di images in parallel.The government often tried its best to promote Judge Di's faithfulness and his achievement in re-establishing the Tang Imperial Court,hoping to educate the common people using Judge Di faith;while the common people worshiped Judge Di hoping to pray for blesses and avoid disasters,seeing him as a local god who punished vices,upheld virtues,and protected the country folks.
