The Perilous Nest:The Years in Shan County as Documented in Cai Mailun's Diary(1947-1948)
In 1947,as the CPC commenced its counter-offensive,Cai Mailun joined Western Henan's counter-offensive campaign and led a small contingent back to his hometown,in Shan County,to mobilize the populace and initiate guerrilla warfare.Confronting the Kuomintang government forces that remained in power and the for-midable local armed forces,Cai's team faced a difficult situation-with three advances and two retreats. The sit-uation was further exacerbated by acute estrangement from the masses,a consequence of precipitous land reform, thus intensifying the hardships of guerrilla warfare.Amidst these adversities,Cai and his comrades demonstrated resilience and they strategically shifted tactics to preserve their effective strength. This course of action was under-stood and accepted by their superior authorities.Ultimately, following the shift in the overall strategic situation, the dawn of perseverance in Shan County finally arrived.
