The Cambodian Factor in Sino-French Political Relations in 1970
Following the 1954 Geneva Conference,China and France each established"special relationships"with Cambodia.Based on the neutral policy advocated by Prince Sihanouk, the Indochina issue became a founda-tion for positive tripartite interactions among the three countries. After 1965,political relations between China and France became tense and gradually deteriorated. When attempts to achieve a diplomatic reconciliation reached a stalemate, the March 18,1970 Cambodian coup erupted, leading to the exile of Prince Sihanouk to China, but a visit by a French governmental delegation led by Georges Pompidou presented an opportunity for high-level politi-cal dialogue between the two countries. This dialogue, centered on the Indochina issue, including Cambodia,fa-cilitated mutual understanding and consensus, ultimately leading to an easing of the political tensions.
