The Impact of Comprehensive Healthcare System Reform on the Financial Fragility of Chinese Households
As an important component of background risk, health risk can cause significant financial vulner-ability to the general household. The medical system,as an important social security foundation, can provide critical health protection for families, thereby effectively alleviating their financial vulnerability.Using data from the China Household Tracking Survey(CFPS)from 2010 to 2020,this paper constructs a quasi natural experimental research system, and uses the double difference method to test the impact characteristics and mechanism of comprehensive healthcare reform policies on household financial vulnerability.Research has found that the implementation of comprehensive healthcare reform policies has significantly alleviated the financial vulnerability of households, and this effect is more pronounced in urban households, households with the elderly, households with high risk of children's health, households with strong social networks, households using the Internet, and households with high social trust.Meanwhile, comprehensive healthcare reform policies can alleviate family financial fragility through three ways:reducing family medical burden, increasing family labor participation, and changing family risk attitudes. The paper provides a new perspec-tive for evaluating the effectiveness of comprehensive healthcare reform policies, providing important policy insights for further deepening healthcare system reform at the micro level.
