Vocal folds are considered as the main vibration source of sound. It is relatively clear how the vocal folds function in the mechanism of phonation. As an important part of supraglottic laryngeal structures, the activity of the ventricular folds exists in normal and pathological phonation. However, there has been relatively little research on phonation. Therefore, this paper reviews the research results of ventricular folds in domestic and foreign papers, and clarified the role of ventricular folds in the mechanism of phonation and the manifestations in related diseases.Ventricular folds not only have physical and physiological protective functions, but also play a synergistic role in phonation. With the development of research,it will help to understand human pronunciation, and help speech pathologists better assessment of normal and abnormal pronunciation. Therefore,it can improve the diagnosis and treatment for speech disorders, and also provide new hope for the treatment of ventricular folds related diseases.
