Innovation Index of China's Strategic Emerging Industries:Stylized Facts and Evolution
Strategic emerging industries(SEIs)represent the direction of a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, playing a crucial role in cultivating new quality productive forces and promoting high-quality economic development in China.Based on patent data from the China National Intellectual Property Administration, this paper employs a structural model to calculate the innovation index of China's SEIs from 2008 to 2021.The study also provides an in-depth analysis from the perspectives of time trends, spatial distribution, technology fields, and firms. The results show that the innovation index of China's SEIs has been increasing rapidly, with a steady enhancement in independent innovation capability. The innovation index shows a distinct spatial distribution pattern of"high in the east and low in the west"with an increasingly strong agglomeration trend in first-tier cities and regional centers.Innovation in various sub-industries is flourishing, yet disparities are significant, particularly the catch-up trend in new materials and energy-saving environmental protection fields.Firms in SEIs compete vigorously, with leading firms in many sub-industries establishing a clear innovative edge.
