The effects of biochar on the cultivation of momordica balsam seedlings were studied by adding different volume ratios of biochar to the substrate. The results showed that the addition of biochar increased the bulk density,pH and EC of the matrix, and decreased the total porosity of the matrix. The addition of 10%-15%biochar in the matrix could significantly increased the plant height, stem diameter, seedling strength index, chlorophyll content and net photosynthetic rate of momordica baldica seedlings, and promoted the growth of Momordica charantia seedlings. When the biochar addition ratio reached 15%,the plant height, stem diameter, seedling index,SPAD and net photosynthetic rate increased by 34.84%,39.68%,24.31%,7.91%and 17.47%compared with the control group. Therefore, using biochar instead of peat as seedling substrate could not only cultivate strong seedlings, but also promote the utilization of agricultural waste resources.
