Research progress on the topical use of tranexamic acid in spinal surgery
Tranexamic acid(TXA)is an anti-fibrinolytic drug with hemostatic properties.First introduced into clinical practice in the 1960s,TXA has received much attention. It has been shown to be effective in reducing perioperative and traumatic bleeding. In the field of orthopaedic surgery,TXA has also been demonstrated its effectiveness in total knee and hip arthroplasty, and its use in spinal surgery has been increasing in recent years.TXA can be administered intravenously or topically, but there is still concerns regarding its safety due to the potential increased risk of venous thromboembolism.Compared with intravenous administration, topical application of TXA can reduce systemic absorption and reduce side effects. This review summarizes the efficacy and safety of topical use of TXA in reducing bleeding during the perioperative period of spinal surgery.
