The function and integrity of intestinal barrier are critical for maintaining the health of body.Intestinal barrier dysfunction has emerged as a potential factor influencing the development of bone metabolic diseases.Intestinal barrier function is regulated by a variety of mechanism. The alterations in intestinal barrier function have been shown to be associated with bone metabolic diseases.Pathogens, exogenous irritants, and certain foods disrupt the intestinal barrier by affecting gut microbiota, intestinal mucosal integrity, and intestinal permeability, promote systemic inflammation, and cause malfunction of the body's immune system and tissue damage.Intestinal barrier dysfunction causes increased intestinal permeability.Increased intestinal permeability enhances systemic inflammation and alters intestinal immune function, thereby affecting bone metabolism.Maintaining the integrity of intestinal barrier function has been recognized as therapeutic targets for bone metabolic diseases. The aim of this review is to elucidate the relationship between intestinal barrier function and bone metabolism. The importance of the intestinal barrier for bone metabolism is highlighted by outlining the process of bone remodeling, the relationship between the intestinal barrier and bone metabolism, and finally by addressing the gut micro-environment and bone metabolism.
